Safeguarding Children Program

Organisations, as well as families, play a fundamental role in the health, emotional well-being, physical development and education of children. However, we know that children are inherently vulnerable to abuse by adults who hold positions of power over them.

Organisations cannot afford be complacent. The myth that ‘it couldn't happen here' needs to be dispelled. Organisations need to take preventative steps to safeguard children and young people. The harm caused by abuse can be dire.

ACCYO's Safeguarding Children Program is built on seven standards. The program which is contained in a kit, guides organisations in developing or enhancing their systems and procedures that help protect the children and young people to whom they provide services. 

ACCYO's Safeguarding Children Program Kit contains:

  • clear measurable and achievable standards
  • step-by-step implementation and accreditation guides
  • resources and policies in hard copy and on CD-ROM format

The Safeguarding Children Program is applicable and relevant nationally. It contains resources which assist national organisations design consistent national policy whilst meeting statutory obligations in each State and Territory.

Undertaking the Safeguarding Children Program can assist your organisation to:

  • adopt a best-practice approach to protecting children
  • provide parents with assurance that your organisation values and safeguards children
  • promote a child-safe and child-friendly culture
  • increase understanding of the risks to children and young people when in the care of organisations.

Accreditation

Organisations that implement the standards outlined in the kit can gain recognition for their efforts to safeguard children by applying for accreditation. ACCYO supports organisations to gain accreditation by providing professional advice and assistance.

Accredited organisations demonstrate an ongoing commitment to best practice and quality improvement in relation to the protection of children and young people.
